As every year the city of Jakarta is celebrates it anniversary. And this year is no different, the city is celebrating its 283rd anniversary. But as compared to previous years this year the magic is missing.
Earlier the promotions for the event would be fantastic, extensive and very imaginative. Throughout the city one could not help but notice the hoardings and posters. The city would be decorated like a bride, with lights and effigies at almost every traffic signal or junction. Batik would be the latest trend and the Betawi flavor everywhere. Well at least batik is still hot this season. Except for some celebration on 22nd June nothing really happened.
The month long Great Jakarta Sale, is almost non-existent. Most of the malls and Department Stores seem to have shied away from giving the shoppers the pleasure of shopping with huge discounts. Where earlier 70- 80 % off was the norm of the day. These days the discounts barely reach 50% off. Such a pity for bargain hunters. Even the Jakatra Fair and the INCRAFT exhibition came and went without much ado. Whereas earlier it was usually a big deal. This does not help in attracting tourists to the city either.
The impact of the recession seems to have hit the city after all. But recession or not, the tradition of celebrating the city’s anniversary must go on, so maybe the authorities will try harder to bring the city into limelight.
