Jakarta Traffic Police chief Sr. Comr. Condro Kirono announced Tuesday the city would increase the frequency of Car Free Day events to twice a month starting July to meet the rising demand from residents and improve air quality. The event will be held on the second and fourth weeks of the respective months.
“Except in July, when it will be held on the first and the second week to coincide with the police’s anniversary on July 4,” Condro stated. The Car Free Day is currently held along Jl. Sudirman and Jl. M.H. Thamrin at the end of every month.
Jakarta, home to 6.5 million vehicles, 98.6 percent of which are privately owned, has been holding the event since 2007 to reduce air pollution.
