Riau Police will deploy 2,279 security personnel to guard May Day activities on Friday, while Banten province held a coordination meeting with businesspeople in an effort to hold a peaceful commemoration.
Riau Police chief Brig. Gen. Dolly Bambang Hermawan said that no proposals for workers’ demonstrations had been submitted as of Wednesday. “There will be social gatherings in the province’s five regencies and cities that will be attended by thousands of workers,” he said.
The police will not disperse any free speech gatherings.“It is the right of citizens to speak up,” Dolly said.
Also on Wednesday, Banten municipality discussed with hundreds of local businesspeople efforts to create a good environment during May Day.
“The Banten government asked businesspeople to facilitate workers who want to take part in the commemoration,” Banten administration secretary Kurdi Matin said in Serang, Banten as quoted by Antara news agency.(+++)
