Edo and Wimmy emerged as the winners of the 2009 Jakarta Tourism Ambassador Competition after beating 34 finalists selected from hundreds of entries.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo says the pair was chosen because of their in-depth understanding of the issues the city faces.
[Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta Governor]:
I believe the judges have made the right choice, the tourism ambassadors will be up to the tasks. As representatives (of the city), they must have an in-depth understanding of the issues Jakarta is facing, so they can clearly explain the solutions to the community.
Besides their main duty as Jakarta’s tourism ambassadors, the winners are also expected to play a part in the citys campaigns to curb the rate of drug abuse and deaths from motorcycling accidents.
[Wimmy, 2009 Tourism Ambassador]:
My first feeling is very happy that I can win, but the second feeling is we have big responsibilities. One of them is to advance Jakarta tourism potentials and to preserve traditional Jakarta culture.
[Ahmad Murtadho (Edo), 2009 Tourism Ambassador]:
We also act as the anti-drug ambassadors. We need to speak about the dangers of drug abuse, the dangers of taking many kinds of drug, so we can stop drug abuse. Of course we are not only bringing awareness to this issue to the people in the high socio-economic class, but also to those in the lower class. Most drug abuses occur among the lower socio-economic groups.
Edo and Wimmy will each take home a new car, prize money and merchandise worth about $10,000.
