Jakarta Police have named Ahmad Abdul Qodir Jaelani, the 13-year-old son of rock star Ahmad Dhani, a suspect in a deadly crash that killed six people and injured nine on the Jagorawi toll road on Sunday.
Abdul allegedly smashed through a divider and collided with oncoming traffic.
“It was indeed [Abdul] who drove a Mitsubishi Lancer which hit the divider, lost control and hit a [Daijatsu] Gran Max and a [Toyota] Avanza, causing six people to die and nine others to be seriously injured,” said Sr. Cmr. Rikwanto, a Jakarta Police spokesman.
Rikwanto said the police were likely to charge Abdul under Article 310 of the 2009 Law on Traffic and Street Transportation. “We can charge him for his negligence, which caused others to die and sustain serious injuries,” he said.
Adrianus Meliala, a criminologist at the University of Indonesia and a member of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), said Abdul’s father should be held accountable as well.
Ahmad Dhani, Adrianus said, acted irresponsible by allowing his underage son to drive without a driver’s license. He said Dhani could be charged under the Criminal Code and the Law on Transportation.
“However, I believe that there will be pardon as usual,” he said. “We should monitor the National Police in the future so they can treat even jet-setters fairly.”
Abdul broke a leg in the accident and has since undergone surgery.
